Single- + two-family fire alarm systems must comply with NFPA 72 when installed

Virginia USBC 2021 Amendment 28 (IRC R314.7)

Description

A fire alarm system complying with Sections R314.7.1 through R314.7.4 shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 72. Where installed, the fire alarm system shall become a permanent fixture of the dwelling.

Why this exists

Permits substituting a fire alarm system for individual smoke alarms when the NFPA 72 design is used. The permanent-fixture clause prevents removal during ownership change.
