Smoke alarms required throughout dwelling
IRC R314Description
Smoke alarms must be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and on every level of the dwelling including basements.
Why this exists
Most fire deaths happen at night during sleep. Code requires interconnected smoke alarms with a battery backup so a fire detected anywhere wakes everyone — even if power is out.
