Pressure-treated wood requirement

IRC R317.1

Description

Wood in contact with concrete, masonry, or earth — or within 6" of grade — must be naturally durable (heart cypress, redwood) or pressure-treated.

Why this exists

Untreated wood in damp contact rots in 5-15 years. PT or naturally durable species is the lowest-cost durability fix.
