Guards on raised surfaces
IRC R312.1Description
Walking surfaces ≥30" above grade or floor below must have a 36" guard. Open sides of stairs ≥30" above grade require a 34" guard.
Why this exists
Falls from raised decks, balconies, and stair landings are common; guards are the catch.
