Stair handrails
IRC R311.7.8Description
Stairs with ≥4 risers must have a handrail on at least one side, 34-38" above the tread nosing, with a graspable cross-section.
Why this exists
Handrails are the catch when a foot misses a tread. The height range matches the natural reach of adult arms.
