Rule of thumbRecommended
Ceiling height proportional to room size
CEILING-HEIGHT-BY-ROOM-SIZEDescription
Larger rooms benefit from taller ceilings. 9' ceilings minimum for great rooms; 11-12' for double-height vaulted areas. Bedrooms feel cozy at 8-9'; kitchens at 9-10'.
Why this exists
Proportion: an 8' ceiling on a 20×30 room feels squat; a 12' ceiling on a 10×10 bedroom feels cavernous.
