Dishwashers should be installed within 36" of the cleanup sink edge, and there should be ≥21" of clear standing space adjacent to the dishwasher door's opening side.
Why this exists
Dish loading is a sink-to-dishwasher motion; the 36" rule keeps the loop short. The 21" standing space lets a person bend without bumping into another fixture.
