Refrigerators need at least 15 inches of landing area on the handle side (or directly across from it in a galley layout). NKBA Guideline 8.
Why this exists
A fridge needs at least 15 in of counter on the latch side for unloading groceries. Otherwise the user holds groceries with one hand while opening the door.
